(Bar Beach, NSW – Saturday, 13 September 2008): Joel Reading (Wallabi Point, NSW) came, saw and conquered today at the Wild Surf Co. Mattara, claiming his second crown and the ratings lead on the Hurley NSW Championship Circuit.
Held at Bar Beach, on the shores of Newcastle, competitors were greeted with super contestable one-metre conditions, but it was Reading who walked away with the title and the cash.
Up against an all-star cast in the final, Reading defeated Toby Martin (Dee Why, NSW), local lad Mitch Noonan (Fingal Bay, NSW) and Chris Enever (North Narrabeen, NSW) in a tightly contested final, who all finished second, third and fourth respectively.
Reading was without doubt the form surfer of the event.
“I’m so stoked,” Reading said after accruing a total heat score of 13.80 (out of a possible 20).
“There were so many good surfers competing this year and the competition was so hard,” he added.
Having won the prestigious Wild Surf Co. Mattara crown back in 2002, Reading feels a definite affection with the event; now in its 46th year.
“It’s such an iconic event,” he said.
“To get my name on the trophy with the likes of MR (Mark Richards) I’m over the moon.”
“It’s a great event and I’m glad that it’s still kicking on,” Reading added.
Heading up the local contingent with McNicol was Travis Lynch (Merewether, NSW) and Duncan McNicol (Newcastle, NSW) who were unfortunately bundled out in the semi-finals.
As the fourth stop on the prestigious Hurley NSW Championship Circuit, the Wild Surf Co Mattara turns it’s attention to the cadet division (16 and under) tomorrow, with some of the best junior surfers in the country converging upon Bar Beach.
With the likes of Jordi Watson (Currarong, NSW), Oscar Scanes (Old Bar, NSW) and Wade Carmichael (Central Coast, NSW) ready to do battle, the action is sure to be electric.
Competition starts at 8am tomorrow with finals to be decided by early afternoon.
